Crime statistics for Kent County are collated by the Rhode Island State Police. In its latest crime reports, Kent county recorded 236 violent crimes and 2,940 property crimes in 2018. Compared to the crime figures for 2014, violent crime and property crime rates fell by 7.1% and 23.6% respectively. A closer look at the reported Part I crimes for 2018 shows that there were 1 murder, 108 rapes, 29 robberies, and 98 aggravated assaults. In that same year, the county also recorded 242 burglaries, 1,868 larceny thefts, and 135 motor vehicle thefts.
A quick analysis of Kent County’s most recent five-year crime trend shows that rape crime rate remained unchanged while incidences of murder went from zero to 1 between 2014 and 2018. On the other hand, the incidences of other crimes declined in the same period: robbery (12.1%), aggravated assault (13.3%), burglaries (23.4%), and larceny (25.1%).

A check, money order, or credit card is accepted for payment for an in-person request. Credit card payment attracts an additional processing fee of 2% plus 50 cents. When making a request by mail, complete the application form (also provided in Spanish) and then send it along with a copy of a valid ID, a check or money order for the payment, and a self-addressed stamped envelope to the address above.

While some courts in Kent County fall under the state trial court system, others are local courts operated by the county’s municipalities. The clerk’s office for each court in the county maintains its court records. Each clerk provides public computer terminals in the office to view non-confidential records of the court. The public can also remotely search these records online by visiting the Rhode Island Judiciary Public Portal. The portal contains only the database of records for courts in Kent County under the state trial court system. Kent County marriage, birth, and death records are provided by the State of Rhode Island Department of Health. The Department issues a copy of each certificate for a $22 fee for the first copy ($25 for a mail-in request) and $18 for each extra copy of the same record purchased the same day. A request may attract an additional $2 search fee per year and rush request costs an additional $7. To request a certified copy, take along a copy of a valid photo ID and visit:
